I finished reading 'The Education of Little Tree' by Forrest Carter.  I'd heard about the book from This American life and Radio Diaries (https://soundcloud.com/radio-diaries/14-the-long-shadow-of-forrest-carter).  It was a coming of age story of a young Cherokee boy.  Like Tom Sawyer, Little Tree is an orphan.  He is adopted by his grandparents -- mountain people.  He does not go school.  His grandparents teach him 'The Way'.  They have an interesting network of friends.  They moonshine for a living.  It was an interesting story, written by an interesting author.  The Radio Diaries article has an interesting backstory on the Forrest Carter.  It seems pretty timely with the anniversary of the civil rights movement.  It provides an interesting -- not quite soothing insight into that time.
